Travel around Prague_Hotels_restaurants
Dear colleagues,
For anyone unfamiliar with Prague, the attached PDF has some information
which may be useful.
The SSA talks will be in the Old Town, at the Karolinum and the FF UK
(Filozofická fakulta Univerzity Karlovy, specifically at street address
Hybernská 3 in the “Šporkův palác”), which are both east of The Old Town
Square (Staroměstské náměstí). Karolinum and the FF UK are both marked
on the map, along with some of the popular hotels; the distances and
approximate walking times to the two venues are also shown.
There are many hotels in the Old Town, in a range of prices (from
moderate to very expensive), including many options with small kitchens
and some which are pet friendly. Although most of these Old Town
properties have been refurbished in the past two decades, they maintain
their quirky charm of past centuries. Look carefully at the on-line
photos before you make your booking, and pay attention to the
information about square footage, elevators, wheelchair accessibility,
and other such things which may be important to you. As with all old
properties, there is great variation, and no one needs an unexpected
surprise.
Frequent travelers who have Hilton or Marriott brand loyalty may find it
difficult to reserve the nearby Hilton and Marriott directly; however,
you can more easily make your reservation by booking with your Hilton or
Bonvoy membership or by reserving through your partner airline website.
Availability for the Hilton and Marriott also changes frequently as
frequent travelers and corporate agents make and cancel reservations.
Major airlines, such as United, offer discounts for many unbranded Old
Town properties, and your AmEx, Chase, or other travel card will have
similar deals.
For graduate students and others on a tight budget, the SSA has secured
some double-occupancy student apartments in one of the newly refurbished
southern residential areas about 30 minutes (one bus ride) south of Old
Town. We only have spaces for about two dozen persons, and our
reservations for these should be confirmed during the next two weeks. If
you are interested in staying in one of these apartments, please write
for details to <director+prague@semioticsocie
<mmachacek90@gmail.com> (Martin Macháček).
The Conference program will be available later; however, here are some
dates and times to help you plan your travel and determine your lodging
preference:
Wednesday (24 Sept.), 3-5 pm, Registration at FF UK.
Wednesday, 5 pm, Opening Ceremonies at FF UK.
Wednesday, 7 pm, Welcome party in Café na Boršově at street address
Náprstkova 272/10.
Thursday, Friday (Karolinum), Saturday, plenary and concurrent sessions
usually at FF UK.
Sunday, 9 am, Business Meeting, Skautský Institute (in Old Town Square).
With best regards,
